Red Star Chicken

The Red Star or the Red Sex-Link is a hybrid breed of Sex-Linkable Chickens. It is being produced by crossing a Rhode Island Red or a New Hampshire rooster with a White Plymouth Rock, a Rhode Island White, a Silver Laced Wyandotte, or a Delaware hen.

Red Star chicks can be differentiated at 1-day old, meaning that male and female chicks hatch in different colors. Male chicks hatch out white and depending on the cross, they feather out to pure white or with some red or black feathering. Also, depending on the cross of the parents’ breeds, females will hatch out buff or red. The Red Star chicken has a single comb, moderate-sized wattles, red earlobes and bright-yellow legs.

There are some recognized subcategories of the Red Sex-link chickens. The most common subcategories are the Canadian ‘Red Shaver’, and the American French ‘ISA Brown’. Red Shaver hens can lay around (305 – 315) eggs per year, and ISA Browns lay approximately 300 eggs per year. In general, Red Star hens are egg laying machines of brown eggs, and are used intensively as battery hens.
